Shabby Chest Redo from Habitat Restore

I get a lot of goodies from the Habitat Restore. In fact, I was accumulating so many treasures and I loved the people there so much I decided to be a volunteer at my local Habitat Restore. I have to say it is just and enjoyable as I knew it would be. I find so much reward in volunteering my time for a good cause, interacting with amazing people, and getting out of the house to “hang out” at my favorite kind of place- a treasure store!

Needless to say, since volunteering my finds have only increased. And thanks to the great Leo, our manager, I am able to get great deals. Thanks Leo!

Last weekend I saw this girl as soon as I walked in the gate buried under other “junk”. I inspected, did the wobble test, and opened drawers. I was in love! She looks a million years old but is still just as functional as the day she was built (they don’t make them like they used to)! There are even little wheels at the bottom of the legs- I love it! As usual, I stuck a big old sold tag on another piece of “junk” that resulted in some raised eyebrows.

When I got it in the house I had a hard time decided where it’s new home would be. I decided in the bedroom, which prompted an entire bedroom redo I will post more on later. I actually think this is an End of Bed Dresser after some research. I tried this at the end of our bed but ultimately decided on between two sitting chairs.

My husband suggested using chalkboard paint on the top because I knew I wanted to leave most of the shabbiness, but honestly the top was too shabby even for me. Chalkboard is a go-to around here so that was the choice. In looking at the pictures I still like the top the way it was before too but in person it looked a lot worse. The rest is a great crackle finish that some may find “dirty” but I think looks perfectly loved.

Snow Days and a Coffee Filter Wreath

It will be our fourth day of school closings tomorrow due to the amount of snow and ice we have here in North Carolina. This is unusual for us, and all of the business/ school closings have resulted in some cabin fever around here.

While I am enjoying the beauty of nature and reveling in the joy of a child experiencing it...

I am also very bored (after playing in the snow).

Enter coffee filter wreath. I saw this first at the Nesters but they are all over blogland. You should check her other links to even more coffee filter projects. I think up next for me will be a book page wreath. They are both so easy, cheap, and pretty! Especially when you recycle a used wreath form at the thrift store for 80 cents!

I'm working on a little project for the cutest shabby table I picked up at our local Habitat Restore. Which then prompted a midnight bedroom rearranging Saturday night. That's right be jealous of my Saturday nights girls. More on that soon!

Flashback Friday: Taking Back The House

Have you seen the ABC comedy, The Middle? I find it hilariously funny due to the honesty about the unglamorous life of parenting. I can really relate to all aspects and love to watch a refreshing show that doesn't make you feel like something is wrong with your family if you are not "perfect"

Wednesday's episode "Taking the House Back" was no let down and I was thinking how this applies in so many ways in our home. I decided to take MY house back when toddler toys started bursting out of the seams of our house. I know toddlers need toys and there is nothing wrong with having a "family" home. I just wanted to keep the "family" narrowed down to fewer rooms. One example would be the upstairs bathroom. The kids sea theme was starting to blind my eyes every time I walked in. Then it hit me one day. Kids can take baths in bathrooms without fishes on the wall! Ya know what? They can!

Like I said, nothing against kids rooms but I just wanted a room that I felt comfortable in also.

See the "textured" walls? After removing some wallpaper our drywall was pretty much ruined so I tried a tissue paper technique on them that turned out kind of neat. It looks great in the new gray also. Almost like stucco.

I also did the entire makeover with items we had around the house and paint in the shed. Cost to "take my house back?" = $0

I have a love of all things signage. Found this one at Hobby Lobby for $3.

I love looking back at old pictures and then to new ones of homes. Its fun to see the transformations with a flash instead of the long process it actually takes to get your home how you want it. And honestly, my daughter has no problem taking baths and brushing her teeth in here while having just as much fun as she did "under the sea".

Happy Birthday to a woman who has inspired me so in the past year...

A woman who continues to inspire me through her terrible loss and tragedy her family suffered from the week of Christmas.

Happy Birthday to a woman who I have never met in person but has still shown her love and devotion to her family in everything she does and has inspired me to do the same.

Happy Birthday Edie! You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hello blogland! I have to apologize for abandoning my dear little blog for so long. Not to get in to too many excuses or details, it was just a crazy end of 2010 and I couldn't muster up the energy to blog let alone work on projects to blog about! No worries, I did work on a few projects that we will catch up on but for now I wanted to give a sneak peak of inspiration photos for 2011 projects that I can't wait to start on!

So many people make new years resolutions but mine are more goals/ projects to work on. I really am so excited to get started and also see everyone else's projects to come!

Recent thrift finds: Family Room Update

It seems like I am forever updating this family room/den/play room. I can never just get it right, ya know? For starters, it is a very awkward room with virtually no walls to work with. One is a fireplace, another doorway and window, and the other two also both have doorways. It's also very long and narrow.

I have painted the old paneling in here several different colors in the past few years but am satisfied with my current color, Smoke Embers by Valspar. I think painted paneling naturally gives a coastal feel so that is the style I am leaning towards without going too obvious and overdoing shells, etc.

Another must when updating any room is to use as many thrift finds as possible and to stay on a strict budget. I painted an old coffee table white with a chalkboard top for a fun feature. I slipcovered  the sofa in drop cloths from Home Depot, and found this FAB rug at a flea market for $30. The orange wool Ikea pillow was $1 at a yard sale and the teal pillow covers were on clearance at Target.

See my birdcage in the back? It houses two real live Finches and was $7 at a yard sale!

I also really, really loved this white bamboo mirror I found for $5 at a yard sale. Its old and very heavy. I did not have to paint it, it was already white. The little Ikea floor lamp was from the Habitat Restore, $20.

The bookshelf in the back is a work in progress. I am not good at arranging bookshelves to look full but not cluttered and also both functional and pretty. I am currently trying to add some of my white milk glass collection.... any tips on bookshelves?  

This vintage GE fan was at the same yard sale as the bamboo mirror, $3. It works great too! I just think it's the cutest thing!

In light of Spring and Summer I took the advantage of all the beachy cool colors of inspiration and finally tackled some project of my own to lighten up the colors around our home. I managed to redo our living room on a very low budget and am continuing to do things here and there a little at a time.

About a year ago I found a great aqua blue can of paint at Sherwin Williams in the mistint section for $5. I used it in the laundry room and have found many more uses since!

The best reason to thrift shop

It's no secret on blogland today that it's become a trend to scavenge for thrift finds to fix up and customize to your style at home. I have always loved thrifting, a hobby my Mom and I did together. We would sift through yard sales and thrift shops to find old furniture to refinish and even great clothes. It's become even easier today with online sites such as Craigslist, Freecycle and more.

While the obvious reason to buy junk to most is to save money, it's so important today to incorporate this into the effort to go green and improve our environment!

Many people still think thrifting is for "poor people" and feel ashamed to go into a Goodwill. Every time I am in a thrift store I look around and imagine all of this stuff in a landfill. Add all of the stuff in every other Goodwill or any other thrift store for that matter, added on top of all of the actual garbage and items not recycled! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle has to become a way of life. Unfortunately in today's environmental state this can no longer be simply a liberal, hibby thing to do. It's a way of life people. 

Recycling is more than throwing your drink cans in the recycle bin. Think beyond the recycle bin.

I recently watched this video The Story of Stuff. It has great information on the intentional and taught consumerism attitude that is supposed to save our economy and the vicious cycle it's spinning us in. There are so many inspiring finds I read daily where items are reused. Sometimes you can find items brand new on Craigslist instead of contributing to more items being manufactured at the stores. While yes, someone else may have purchased this item on Craigslist eventually and would not necessarily end up in a land fill, why not do your part in stimulating the process? Not to mention the extra cash in your pocket....

A new thrift favorite, a birthday, and slipcover party! (it's been a while)

So, I haven't blogged in awhile. I've thought about it. Then I wonder if my five readers will even notice. I've decided to go ahead and post a few things happening lately for you five anyway. :)

Up above is my new favorite thrift find from Value Village- a vintage Pepsi crate. Don't you love it? It was $8 and she was marking it down 1/2 off as I asked to see it. 

Susanna turned 17. Here is the now required Suzie and Payton picture at the cake each year. Payton has to help her blow out the candles. This year we had a pink and chinese birthday with the family.

Plenty of caterpillars have been found in the back yard. Payton loves them now. So does the dog LuLu and we have to keep her from squishing them. 

And not to mention my very fun filled experience with some amazing women at the Nesters. Here are Kristi and Nester brainstorming. We slipcovered her infamous toile sectional sofa. I always loved that toile but I think I love it even more all white. It looks so lovely in her home. It's just as cozy and soothing as the pictures look online and the Nester is just as sweet as you would expect.

Here are a couple of the slipcover makers in action Ellen, and Tracey. Them and all the other girls were just the most talented, fun ladies to be sewing with all day.

My drop cloth slipcover

I finally joined the slipcover band wagon! This is my first slipcover and it's not perfect by any means but I like it! I could have straightened it before I took the picture. It's not really that crooked at the seams. This sofa was not a bad print or anything but it was a solid brown canvas that could not be kept clean! I washed the covers of the cushions a couple times and they started to fade and tear. It was getting sad. I would have been lazy and just bought a decent looking pre made slipcover but that became tricky with the type of pillows on the sofa.

I love the look (and price) of the painters drop cloth from Home Depot and decided to use it as my material. I also scored on a twin pack 6x12 cloth for $9.99, basically buy one get one free. I bought two packs thinking 4 cloths would be enought but ended up having to go back for another and used 5 cloths. So $30.00 total. Not bad!

Lighten up! A living room redo.

This is my living room before. It was fine. However when I first walked in the room my eyes had to adjust to everything being so dark. The furniture, the walls, and just not enough natural light brought in the room. I planned on making slipcovers but if I had a picture of this whole set, you would see how massive it was and the task seemed too large.
Then a thought occurred to me. What if someone would buy my stuff off Craigslist for the amount I need for what I want at Ikea? It worked!

I also got the chandelier of Craigslist. This room does not have an overhead light so this little candle holding lovely anchors the seating area and adds great character to the room.

The buffalo check came down and up went light airy neutrals that let in the sun light.

I plan on covering the tall chair by the table (currently draped with a tablecloth).  And recovered my table in all burlap with a vintage white linen cloth.

So, the moral to the story is... if you are not happy with what you have don't be afraid to change it up! Especially if you can find a way to get what you love for little to no cost! 

Subway Art Inspired Family Rules

I am in the process of redoing some things in our home to feel more light and airy. I am really inspired by all the whites out there but am trying to find a common ground between what we have and something more fresh. I sold my old furniture set for the exact amount I need to purchase the lovely white slip covered sofa and chairs at Ikea. In the mean time I'm also editing my accessories and art.

I have been loving all of the subway art inspired pieces lately and also the family rules boards I've seen around. I also wanted to add a little more touch of modern around here. Some areas were looking a little Grandma-sh. Just sayin. So, in the spirit of using what I have I came up with a little something of my own.

This is a print on canvas purchased at Kirklands that was in our kitchen before the kitchen redo. It's OK but the colors don't work in any of our rooms any more. Insert black paint and stencils.

I painted the canvas black (ack!). My husband kind of winced at the sight of me painting over the old picture but I had no worries.... I knew it would be great! I layed out the letters I was going to stencil to get a feel for where to put them and then painted the white with a spongy crafty brush thing.

The finished product with our family rules. I liked it being more of a art piece than a rules board but it still serves the purpose. I am going to love the black and white focus piece with the white furniture when it arrives!

Side note: I may be painting over and redoing the "pay it forward" to "read more books". We'll see.

A weekend and under $200 = one bathroom makeover

The one project I have wanted to tackle lately has been the master bath. Especially every time I cleaned it. DO you ever scrub and scrub and it still feels dirty? Well, that was this bathroom. Yuck.

This is the before photo. This was after a little deconstruction but trust me, it didn't start out much better than this. Ugly carpet, broken vanity (I had a mistreatment over it), stained marble counter, and rust colored walls do not bring a "spa" feeling.

After. Beadboard wallpaper, new craigslist vanity for $40 spruced up with some black paint, and hardware from Hobby Lobby. Oh and new flooring! I will have to update with a picture of that.

A molding project and more!

I have been wanting to add some architectural detail below the chair rail in my dining room and was considering several options. It seems many have had success with beadboard or beadboard wallpaper, board and batten, and molding. I wanted to try the beadboard wallpaper because I am intimidated  by measuring and cutting. However, when I looked at the roll of wallpaper available at Lowes, I was disappointed. It just looked striped to me.

Anyway, to cut to the chase I have been swooning over Thrifty Decor Chicks molding skills for quite sometime and she just makes it seem so darn easy! So, that is what I decided to try.

The molding is already white for $4 per 8ft. at Lowes.That and a can of white paint was in my budget. See all the gaps? Yes, this took a lot of tweaking...

And it's official. I should avoid all projects requiring measuring and cutting. Lets just say the other blogs I studied up on are right. A little caulk and paint goes a long way! 

I definitely think it opens the room, brightens it, and helps break up all of the brown and wood tones in the room. It does give a lot of impact for little money.

I was also inspired by photos like this in the new Pottery Barn catalog with the pictures layered on a wire or tacked together to create a display.

We have a ton of old family photos that are fantastic in black and white that I have really wanted to use in our decor. So, this is what I came up with. I think I like it although I will eye them if we ever do use the fireplace... What do you think?

DIY Valentines

I saw this post from Blue Cricket Designs and loved it! So cute, fun and easy. It also very much represents Paytons personality. I decided I wanted to try and do something like this for her class.

Then I found these cute little cupcake marshmallows for $1 each at Walmart and decided to use them along with some doily hearts I had at home to create this sweet little treat. I think the whole class will get a kick out of them :)

A few Goodwill Finds

I can not pass up a good find at a thrift store. It's an urge that I can't escape. I try to stay away in fear I will end up being one of those ladies with lots of nick nacks and well, junk all over the house. I like a clean, open space. But I also like cute stuff at cheap prices. So I've been studying on how to arrange like items together in groupings so they don't just look like junk. I will show you what I come up with soon. I have been inspired by many lovely blogs.

A few things I keep my eye out for: white dishes, mercury glass, birds, picture frames, glass ware and I love the Target items that Goodwill gets.

Here are a couple of ducks and mercury glass candle holders from target for a steal. Also a cute little clock I knew I could find a place for.

This is my favorite find in a while. One of those old fashioned looking phones. For $15 it's more than I usually spend on one item but I couldn't resist. I tested it and yes it works! Only problem is I don't have a phone jack anywhere I would like to put it. I will figure something out but for now it's just sitting pretty. :)

A kitchen redo update

Upon removing our cabinet doors  recently, I decided this was not enough impact for me. I tried colored dishes on display, didn't work for me. I tried all white dishes. Better but was missing some shall we say "umph!"?

I had this scrapbook paper I was using for another project and tested a sheet behind areas and thought about it for a couple of days. I really wanted to find more of a sticky wallpaper but was unable to find a pattern I liked.

So to Hobby Lobby we went and 25 sheet at $.59 ea and a roll of double sided tape later....

I am happy! I don't think it's obvious at all that its scrapbook paper and it can easily be changed if when I get sick of it! While taking these pictures I realized it would be nice to have light shining from the top of the cabinets. I might have to take another look at the battery powered stick on above cabinet lights I was eying last week.
Please disregard the fact that I did not even bother to wipe the counters before I took these pictures. :) It has been a week of the sickies at our house and this is all the energy I could muster up for today.

A kitchen redo

I have really wanted to try open shelving in my kitchen for a while. At first I planned on mounting shelves on the walls but the only available space was above our breakfast table. I know it might be silly but I don't like shelving above my head. So my next thought went to inspiration I have seen on the internet where people are just removing their cabinet doors. What? Crazy! Well, DH thinks so but I decided to try it out. If I didn't like it I told myself, I could always put them back on! 

*Please excuse my misspelling on the backsplash! I was too lazy to retake the pictures once I realized there is not an 'e' in 'appetit".* Thank you. moving on.
This side has some of my favorite white dishes displayed on top and our every day dishes on the bottom. I weeded out any that didn't coordinate well and we still have plenty to use. I stashed all of the kiddie plastics in one cabinet that has a door. I was nervous about all of my un-pretty clutter but was able to find a new home for that stuff without a problem.

 This side with the glasses is my least favorite. I haven't quite figured out just how it should be arranged yet but it will get there.

I printed the black and white bird picture from The Graphics Fairy and had these plates in a cabinet. The birdie plate at the top was a score at TJ Maxx thanks to a heads up from Rhoda@ Southern Hospitality! I planned on buying several but they only had one left.

I also repainted this grayish blue color I mixed with two mistints from Sherwin Williams for $5 each.

I got my little silhouette black rooster on clearance at hobby lobby. The chalkboard was from a project here.

I love the new wall color. So far I love the open shelving as well. We have a small kitchen so it opens it up and provides  display space and storage all in one area. Love multi purposing!

Using Christmas ornaments all year

I admit. I have been a little stumped after Christmas on what to put on the front door and around the home for winter decor. I know Valentines day is coming up but sorry folks, that is not a holiday I deem fit for my home decor. Maybe I will hang a heart wreath when the time is sooner but I am not making any promises.

So I decided to do as the Nester does and "use what I have". I found this door hanging container that I picked up at Goodwill a while back and removed some greenery off of my fall wreath. I stuffed the container with the greens and then picked out some Christmas tree ornaments that I left to the side in hopes of being able to use them more. Those would be the little bird in the nest and the rustic star.

With all of the cute Christmas themes out there I'm sure all of you have some that could be used all year. Did you keep them out? I think this is a "season neutral" greeting at the door that can last me until at least sprint. Unless I put a Valentines heart that is....

I do. The Graphics Fairy! She has the cutest vintage graphics printables FREE! I had some extra picture frames to use in some areas and gave it a try. I was not disappointed.

Don't you just love the bird above? There are more like it!

This little number above is in my kitchen. I did have a Christmas vintage coffee add for the Holidays here but forgot to take a pic. This is my replacement. I just left the coffee add behind this one so when Christmas rolls back around all I have to do is switch them and use the same frame.

This was a vintage Santa image I used on a table in the living room.

DIY Burlap Wreath and a tutorial

The Christmas decor is down and it's time to fill in spaces with something for the new year. I had a pine wreath on this mirror for Christmas and liked the way it looked so I wanted to replace it with another wreath. I didn't have what I wanted on hand but I did have burlap. I always have burlap. I have seen wreaths similar to these on blogs so I decided to whip one up for myself!

It's VERY simple- that's why I was capable of making one, so here's how it's done:

1. Get a wire hanger and shape into a circle. If your hanger you find is anything like mine was, this is easier said than done. 

2. Cut 4-6 inch strips. I started with 6" but decided I liked the 4" better. I used about 5 strips that were about 3 feet long.

3. Poke hanger through burlap in about 3"folds and scrunch down.

It's 2010! This has been another eventful year for us. Honestly, we have not had an uneventful year yet but this was certainly no exception. We have three trees this year. I hope to add another at the end of the season every year until I have one in each room. Call me crazy but I think it sounds so fun and why not enjoy the magic of the Christmas tree in every room of your home? Sounds magical to me. So here is what we have for now. Hope you enjoy!

My angel tree topper from Goodwill. I also have a Santa but the angel claimed her space this year. I don't really have a "theme" but all of the colors coordinate to create a cohesive feel.

This is a peak at our colorful tree in the play room. This is a fun little sign I hung on the tree instead of the wall.

I love stars and have to add a touch of them everywhere. These blue ones were perfect for our fun color tree.

Chalkboard tagged stockings

It's looking a lot like Christmas here at the Isrel home! I finally have all of my decorations out. Well, the ones I'm using this year anyway. Most of our Christmas decor is a natural/ traditional look but I use the play room to have a little fun. This is the room where I use colored lights, bright tree, and happens to be the only fireplace in the house so also where we "hang" our stockings.

This year we needed to add a couple of additions to our family and the old stockings were looking a little dingy so I found these at Old Navy on sale for $1 and couldn't resist! Yes, ONE dollar. These are a little unconventional compared to my usual style but I thought they were fun and went with it.

I wanted to hang wooden letters for each persons stocking but had a hard time finding just the right thing when I was stuck with an idea! Chalkboard paint on wood rectangles! What else? I should just head straight to chalkboard paint any project I do.

I trimmed each stocking with ribbon and trim remnants I had. Then I mod podged the back of the wood piece with scrapbook paper, painted the front with the chalkboard paint and glued jute to the back to tie on the stockings.
I think they turned out pretty cute and are fun too!

I finally got sick enough of my yellowish walls in the living room to get up the energy to paint them. The color before was supposed to be a vanilla but was more buttery and did not mesh well with my furniture. Sorry for a lack of before pictures but here is how it turned out!

I love the shade of green. It's dark enough for some drama but still soft and soothing.

I think it ties in all of my colors without being to "matchy". Note: I LOVE all of the beachy themed, light, natural living rooms I have been eyeing in other blogs but new furnitre was out of the question and quite frankly I"m not sure that look is for us. I need colors that don't show dirt!

This shows my goodwill broken clock turned chalkboard and old shutter door to a closet. Have I ever mentioned I love stars? This is one of 3 in this room.

Because you just gotta. :)

Our Anniversary (and a homemade gift idea)

It's our anniversary! Four years married to be exact. And with the current economic times, my birthday being just 5 days prior, and Christmas on the way, I'm afraid our gift budget is always low. This year I took the opportunity to force myself to be creative and give a gift from the heart. I actually really enjoyed making this gift. I found myself reminiscing the entire time I made it and really got me in the spirit and romance of an anniversary. Store bought items and the usual "expected" gifts can take away from that I think.

So with that in mind I know everyone has holiday lists to complete and thought this turned out as a sweet little gift that could be tailored to anyone. Here's what I did.

I simply used my photo editor (Picassa, but any would do) to choose my photos, tweak them to black and white, then added text. I found great pictures of my husband doing all the things he does :)
I created a cover with writing only using the Paint accessory.
Cut burlap to allow about 1/4" on each side of picture, frayed edges, and used Fabri-Tac to glue picture to burlap.
Hole punch the corners. My hole punch went right through the burlap but I did use a pen to push through it on a couple. You just need a big enough hole for the ribbon. You could also do two hole punches on either side for more of a book effect but I stopped with just the one.
Choose ribbon to thread through the hole, tie a knot to secure, then a pretty bow.
Enjoy giving the gift to the receiver knowing they can keep this for years to come!

Hate your mini blinds?

I was inspired by several bloggers to turn my little girls ugly $3 mini blinds in to Roman Shades. It was either that or invest in the wood blinds (feaux) which would add up to about $50. Umm, this fabric sitting in my storage bench? Free! Free wins in this house. I did have to go buy some fabric glue. This one, Fabritac, cost $4.97.

I took off the bottom piece of the blinds, cut the tilt strings (not the lift string!) and took off all but 6 slats. I spaced the remaining slats apart about 9 inches.

I used this glue to glue in the hem of all 4 sides of my piece of fabric, then proceed to glue the fabric to both the top and bottom piece of the blinds, and to all 6 slats.

I trimmed the top with some coordinating ribbon but it doesn't stand out too well. I would love to add black out fabric to the back. I think that would make them look higher quality and keep out more light.

Overall, I am happy with them! They are much cuter than the plastic mini blinds and this project took me about 2 1/2 hours. (I'm not good at measuring). For more pictures of Payton's big girl room click here!

Fall Festivities

Saturday was the perfect day for a Halloween festival. It was sunny, just cool enough, and lots of spooky costumes around. This was Paytons first year actually being able to play the carnival games so Mom and Dad got to wait in line after line! :) It was really fun to watch all the little (and big) ones in their costumes though.

Kitchen Reveal

So, here it is. The kitchen/ back splash in completion. This did not take at all long to do and I am happy with the results. It is not by any means formal or fancy but it suits us and I like it!

The back splash behind the counters is chalk board paint (what else?) and behind the stove are the wall tiles you can buy from Home Depot. They used to carry these at my Lowes but now seem to be special order only. Scroll to the bottom of post for before picture.

I like the versatility of the chalk board paint. I can write what ever I feel like! I may need to work on my penmenship though.

Added a bare wintery wreath to the kitchen window and a scrolly decal (you can kind of see) above the sink- Hobby Lobby.

A sneak peek

I have been working on my kitchen the past week or so and plan on revealing the finish at The Inspired Rooms procrastinator party. In the mean time I wanted to share a couple of small projects I have done.

Burlap covered tack board



I have seen other similar projects in blog land and decided to take a combination of things I've seen done and make our own tack board in the kitchen. I much prefer this to papers on the refrigerator!

Here's what I used (all from Wal Mart):
1 cork board -$8
1 yard burlap - $2
black upholstery tacks from the hardware section $2
Black craft paint- .97
stencils - $ 1.97 for the pack

I stapled the burlap to the back of the board. It seemed to staple much better on the cardboard middle section. Stuck tacks around wood frame over the burlap. I stenciled our address at the top and year we were married at the bottom. You could put your name, random numbers, I think anything goes! This gives and old grain sack style to it.

For a finishing touch I used $1 twine from Target and tied a around the board. I later found this worked great to hanging a clothes pin to clip more stuff! Cute and functional!

Head Board Chalk Board

You may have seen Kate's foot board project at Centsational Girl. I loved this project and scored this head board/ foot board (?) at my Goodwill for $2.99! It was already painted this cream color and in great shape so all I had to do was spray paint the middle. I taped around the edges and covered the rest with newspaper. Then I sprayed 2 coats of chalk board spray paint! This unique little number is taking the place of my old run of the mill chalk board that was in our kitchen.

If you don't already have a chalk board in your kitchen I would highly recommend it. They are cute and I love to write notes, and lists on it. Also, everyone in our family loves to see a special board on their birthdays and holidays.

Ballard Beautys

OK, so I know we are just getting started with Fall, but have you seen the new Ballard Designs holiday catalog? My heart was SWOONING each page! Seriously, it was getting me excited for the holidays with so many ideas!
Here are a few of my favorites!

Above: These stockings are adorable! I think I can even make something similar to these with burlap. Who can get enough of burlap these days? I'm telling you- ideas are just racing in my head.

These ornaments are too fun. They also pictured them in a decorative bowl just sitting around. Love em!

And I have something like these drapes in the smaller check but don't you just love this plaid? Great for a cozy winter!

Love these Twelve Days of Christmas ornaments. You get all 12 days in the set. I think they would add a great touch of understated elegance to my tree.

Shut-the front-door!

Here is my weekend project. I have to tell you I am in love. Isn't she a beauty?! I wish I would have taken a before picture of my new door but I was in such a frantic exitement that I did not take the time to snap some shots of her "before". I found this lovely at the Habitat Restore a little bit more shabby than she is now for $40!

A plain greenery behind last years fall wreath, hung by a strip of burlap.

After: Full door shot. I sanded the entire door and stained (both sides) with a can of poly/stain in one I also scored at the Restore!

The handle and lockset was on clearance at Walmart- $25. Entire new (might I say gorgeous) new door for $65 = one happy girl. :)

Pumpkin Patch!

Friday we went with our story time group to Lineberger Farms for a hay ride and pumpkin picking! Payton enjoyed all the toys with her friends and did a great job picking out her pumpkin.

We are loving this fall weather. It is perfect right now here in the Carolinas! A sunny, cool 75 degrees, hanging out outside, windows open in the house, cool enough for home made chilli!

OK, so it's been a tough couple of weeks. Preschool and turning 3 all in the same month! A mother can only handle so much! She's growing up so well though. I'm so proud of my big girl!

A Nesting baby shower

Baby shower preparation is over! Susanna's shower was last weekend and it went very well. We had quite a full house but I think everyone was fed and merry. That's a success in my book!

We had plenty of food and little nest cupcakes. The centerpiece was
birdcage from goodwill and a real birds nest with a little pink birdie.
There were also little nests with pink eggs in the tulle. As well as dollar store
birdies holding Jordan almonds.

We used the mommies letters for the nursery to display the babys
name on the drink table. The water bottles are covered in scrapbook
paper from Hobby Lobby!

I think Mom made out really well with her gifts, now all
that's left to do is wait on baby Gracie!

DIY Baby shower favors

I am planning a baby shower for my step daughter in the nesting/ birds theme and was having a hard time coming up with a favor idea that was within my budget. Finally, I found these white buckets at the dollar store and decided to run with it. I came up with these little buckets of "eggs" using burlap, tulle, Jordan Almonds, and ribbon. I think they turned out quite cute!

Bucket packs of 3 - $1. These include the Thank You tags and white ribbon! However, I did purchase pink ribbon at Micahels for .50 instead.

These can be found at Wal Mart. I got mine at Michaels.

Just cut about a 3" square of burlap to insert in bucket.

I cut a piece of brown tulle and placed 6 "eggs" in each one. Tied with the pink ribbon and Thank You note, then placed bucket.

The finished product!

I made a few of these with the leftovers to display during the shower.

First Day

Today was Paytons first day of preschool. Yes, it's only 2 days and half days at that but this is hard for me. My only little baby is growing up way too fast! I think this picture says it all. She didn't even want to walk with me.

So at noon I rushed to the school to pick her up anxious about her day. Of course she had a wonderful time and made a project she was so proud of. I'm so excited for this new adventure of hers but can't help but ask,
"Why do they grow up so fast!?"

Today I beared the heat and let Payton run around the park for a little bit. We could only stand about 15 mins before it was time for some air conditioning but I managed to snag some photos. I love this dress and didn't want her to sprout out of it before I had time to take some pictures!

Bye Bye baby room

I finally decided it was time to give Payton a big girl room. All tears set aside, it was a lot of fun. It was hard to part with the baby items (well maybe not the diaper pail) which seem to hold such sweet memories, but also fun to expand this room for a growing, imaginative, young girl.

The first dilemma: primary colored sail cloths on the tent bed. I considered ordering identical girl colored clothes, looked at the price, and reconsidered. To Wal Mart I went! I bought inexpensive tab top panel curtains and cut the to size. I then used upholstery tacks to tack up the cloths and applied ribbon trim to coordinate with the tops cloths. Tada! I think it turned out well.

I chose the orange, pink, and red color scheme because I wanted to keep this place fun and playful.
For the closets I used more curtain panels, sheer this time, to create a "dressing room" kind of look.

The mirror you see was an $8 Goodwill find. I painted it white and strung some of her bows across the top (to hide the ugly picture hangers). It also has a cute shelf on the bottom to place a brush etc.

I have found a new love for words. Words on walls that is. I have now done vinyl lettering on two different walls in our home and I just love the results. It is classy, casual, and inspiring! Pictured below is the hallway wall in our entryway. I previously had a iron leaf candle holder and it was just not practical for a busy, narrow hall. Lets just say a couple glass votives didn't make it.

Vinyl lettering was my solution since there is nothing for brushing shoulders to break! Just simply eye candy and inspiring words to remind us of how lucky we are to have this lovely home each time we enter it.

Here is a little something we are keeping our eye on for Suzies room/ nursery.

DIY party at Kimba's- Scrapbook paper Initial

It's DIY Thursday at Kimba's blog, A Soft Place To Land and I wanted to share a recent small project of mine. I know many have discovered the multiple uses for scrapbook paper in home decorating and I decided to try it for a little something to put on the back of our breakfast table bench.

1. I found a set of scrapbook letters and chose our family initial.

2. I picked a coordinating background paper and a box thingy for around the "i".
3. Glued it all together and put it in the $1 frame from a yard sale and called it a day!

I like that it's a fun alternative to a picture and is personalized for the family. An added bonus is that it is not too fragile so moving arms sitting on the bench can't hurt it too bad.

In spirit of The Nesters Price My Space party I thought I would share this recent addition to our living room.

We moved out the entertainment center into the family room but I wanted to keep my stereo in here so I brought out this round table I found in the attic and underneath is the new hiding place for the stereo. Then of course I had to "dress" up the area on a budget so this is what I came up with...

Fabric is from Hobby Lobby marked down from $39 per yard (yikes!) to $13 per yard and I do love it. So at about 9 yards total for drapes and table was $117.
The topper for the table was made from fabric I found at a yard sale; 6 yards for $6. So, for this topper I would say $2.

Appalachian style

I have to confess that my absolute favorite part of camping and exploring the mountains is the drive there. I love to check out each adorable farm house in the country that we drive by. Also all the country charm that North Carolina has to offer. Here are a couple things I snapped some photos of this trip.

Country store in Linville that apparently have fabulous BBQ as people were lining up out the door to get a taste. What drew us in was the live blue grass music. Inside I also discovered lots of local crafts for sale. So cute!

And this cow....which has me thinking of a project for a window JUST like this I picked up for 80 cents the other day!

4th of July Trip

We decided to take off to the mountains for the weekend for some relaxation and take a break from house work/ remodeling. Also, Tommy bought a nifty tent made for the back of a truck that would fit our trailer. He had a plan to turn it into a camper of sorts for us and we wanted to test it out!

We found a great site we have spotted before but were never lucky enough to get! This site is nestled on the river at a large rock that creates a dam of sorts with waterfalls and little pools to wade in. It's heavenly!

We also took a day trip to Grandfather Mtn. and observed their animal habitat which had bears, cougars, eagles, and otters.

Pony Fun!

Payton enjoyed our day at the flea market last weekend. She rode this pony and did very well! This was her first time riding an animal and she handled it like a pro.

Remodel Project Phase umm ...2.75

The remodel project downstairs is continuing. The two bedrooms and pantry have made much progress but are not finished yet. More pictures to come on those later. We finally finished the den area. Well, minus the floor repair and molding. And new patio door to be installed tomorrow. Anyway, it's FEELING almost done!

Remodel Project

I am so exited we finally have the opportunity to tackle this remodel project. My dad was generous enough to offer to do this project for us. We are taking an old over sized rec room and creating two bedrooms, a hallway, and pantry area. This also includes closing in and drywalling part of the existing family/play room.

Here is one of my recent projects. This table was "OK" before and certainly had its share of scratches. So after much thought I decided to take a discount paint color I got from the reject shelf at Lowes and dry brush the entire thing. I then got a couple glass knobs at a favorite local shop of mine and there you have it! From drab to shab! For a total of $15 and about 25 minutes.

Dry brushing is easy to apply, fast drying, and only needs one coat. I love the antiqued result! Do you have something that could use a Green Chic makeover?

Lately I have become a blog addict. Home decorating blogs that is. There are so many fabulous tips from other budget and DIY decorators out there it is overwhelming! I am like a kid in a candy store when I read these ladies genius ideas and I get so inspired. This week I took out much frustration on my poor house. I started with trying the "Nester's" ideas for "mistreatments".

Last weekend we went camping to get away from the daily grind and relax in the GORGEOUS weather. It is so nice to pitch a tent by the side of the river and have all day and night to enjoy it! We took the top off the jeep and strapped the canoe, and off we went! We did learn a lesson. Don't bring the canoe. There are not many places to put it in (the water there is more for Kayaking) and with it strapped to the Jeep it limited our off - roading abilities. Nevertheless, we still had a lot of fun and even spotted a "must have" camping spot to snag in the near future!

Spring Fun!

Now that Spring has officially arrived I wanted to share some spring moments from our home. My favorite things about Spring are our family campfire gatherings in the backyard, the longer days of sunshine, YARD SALES, outdoor picnics, a cold drink, and music of the season. My current music selections to get me geared for the warmer weather are Jack Johnson, Sugarland, and Jason Mraz.

I am currently enjoying a cold Diet Cheerwine ( a southern favorite) and just noticed it is aspartame free! New favorite drink!

Canoeing Around

Last weekend we decided to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and take the canoe out. Along the way we discovered some dirt trails to take the Jeep 4 wheeling. We had a blast! The Jeep got quite dirty and Tommy is very proud of that. Payton got a little scared but was yelling for more by the time we finished. We are looking forward to many more trips this spring and summer!

We had Kylie over to play today. Payton had a blast! She was so excited to have someone to play with other that LuLu. Although there was some fighting over crayons and whose turn it was to go down the slide, they love each other....I even had them mopping the floor and they loved it! Who knew?

I should be terrified of wallpaper after the year I spent tearing it down, yet here we are again. Unfortunately due to some wallpaper damage to this bathroom on the walls the best thing to cover it up was just to wallpaper again. I also had some inspiration from a few of my decorating magazines and .....presto! This is what I came up with! I could not find a good before picture but here is our new 1/2 bath downstairs!

I got this chandelier at a thrift store, spray painted it, and wired and hung it by myself! And yes, it does work. :)

Snow Days!!

North Carolina finally got another dose of its famous March snow madness. 4 days ago we had at least 5" of snow and no power for two days. We spent our nights sleeping in front of the fireplace, eating pizza, and playing charades. Today should be about 70 degrees and sunny! Got to love the weather here.....

While we have yet to see snow this year we are finally getting some downright chilly weather. It got down to 12 degrees last night and supposed to be colder tonight. While we were going to get some dinner we bundled up Payton and she insisted on wearing her sunglasses. "She wears her sunglasses at night....." :)

Well, you may have noticed there are not many posts on here about the teenagers in the house. While they are here and yes, they still exist they just don't do much to report on. So I took a couple photos of a day in the life of the big kids. They are doing well in school so they can often be found doing homework, but most of the time are watching movies and playing games. I guess it could be much worse.... we are pretty proud of them lately.

Happy New Year! We had an uneventful New Years Eve. We ate pizza, watched movies, and managed to stay awake until 2009. The pas couple of weeks have been a little boring for all of us. It was nice to have a break for the Holidays but I am ready to get back to our usual activities. I'm sure Payton is too. Without story time, dance, and play dates, she pretty much plays with the dogs when I am unable to entertain her. Today was her first day back at dance and she was very excited. I had to drag her out of there (which was partly due to a choo choo in a toy box she spotted).

We had a wonderful Christmas here at the Isrel home this year. We opened presents, had breakfast and then had lunch with family here at our house. It was a wonderful time with family and friends. This year was magical for us as it was the first year Payton is experiencing the magic of Christmas. We hope everyone had a happy holiday as well and here's to a wonderful year to come!

'T was the Night before Christmas

Christmas eve we went to Nanna and Grandpa Stevens for the traditional Cuban feast of pork with black beans and rice followed by delicious flan. Payton enjoyed playing with Shelby the dog as usual. On the way home we went through the McAdenville lights, then opended our PJs and went to bed!

Christmas eve eve Payton and I decided to try a little Christmas cookie baking. Payton helped some but mostly wanted to lick the batter of course....who doesn't? We made green sugar cookies with peppermint sprinkles and peanut butter with Hershey kiss cookies. Payton lost interest so I only made one batch and learned I am not the best baker (notice the sorry cake below).

Texas Roadtrip

I took an opportunity this month to venture to Texas. This was my first time meeting my youngest niece , Astanti. It was a very short visit but I loved hanging out with Katie and the girls. The weather was a little crazy. The day before I arrived in Dallas the temp was in the high 70s, the next day? In the 20s and snowing! This made for interesting trip but the girls are both so adorable and smart too! Asanti is very sweet and quiet and Lexani is such a smarty and social girl. She promised to give kisses to Nanna in Washington for me!

Payton did very well at her first dance recital, we are so proud of her! Unfortunately our camera battery was not charged and I did not get much video. Today Paytons dance studio was in the Mt. Holly parade. This was Paytons first time being in a parade and she really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure how she would do on the float without me but she was cool with it. She called the floats cakes. She kept saying "Look! Cake! Look! More cake!" It was pretty cute.....

Well, the weekend after Thanksgiving was quite cold and rainy here. I was very excited to decorate for Christmas and got right on it black Friday (I skipped the shopping). While the inside was finished we were not able to do the outside due to the nasty weather so we took Payton to see Santa instead. She really did not know what to think of him and was about to burst into tears. The photographer is great though and distracted her for about 5 mins and slowly moved her CLOSE to Santa's lap. lol! I think the picture turned out cute but this was just a quick smirk due to the photographer opening a sucker.

Monday was the start of our weekly play date at Eliana's. We had a great time! Payton needs to work on her sharing skills so perhaps this will be good practice. Payton outgrew her toddler bed pretty fast. I would check on her at night and she would have limbs hanging off the bed every which way. This is due to the fact that the girl likes to s-t-r-e-t-c-h when she sleeps. So being the craigslister that I am I kept an eye out for a big girl bed for her. It took a lot of searching through princess beds and other girlie things until I found this really COOL bed. She loves it!(what kid wouldn't)? She eventually does go to sleep and even seems to sleep better now. Score!

Here is some more dance stuff. I can't usually watch her but they had parent observation day and we got to bring our cameras! It was too cute but Payton did spend a lot her time just standing there...I know she is learning things however, because all of a sudden she started doing moves at home like plies and saying "plie..". Also she claps "up..." then "down..." and marches in place "march, march". I was very excited!

Payton has some new shoes she wants to show the world! We picked up these little silver sparkle shoes at a steal and now she won't take them off. She even wears them to bed! What can I say? The girl loves shoes and I have to agree with her these are quite chic.

Nov. 12th was mine and Tommy's anniversary. It has been three years now! These three years have been so eventful and so much has happened it almost seems like forever! We are enjoying every minute of it though and look forward to many more to come. We celebrated with dinner at Lotus sushi bar and intended to see a movie which we NEVER do but absolutely nothing was playing worth paying for! So we bought a couple DVDs and went home for a movie night in.

Well, I did it. I finally gave up trying to grow out these unruly bangs of Payton's and we got her hair cut today. She did better than I expected of course that was largely due to the bribe of a sucker (as pictured). I think her new look is very sophisticated!

Toddler Time Wednesday

Every Wednesday (almost) Payton and I go to Toddler Time at the local library. They sing and dance and read short stories. Of course we can't forget the all time favorite part, bubbles! Over time Payton has become better and actually participating instead of running around the room. She can be moody though. Today she kind of felt like observing more. Payton goes to dance class every Tuesday. She is in a class with other 2 and 3 year olds. It took a few weeks for her to stay in the class without crying for me but she is much better now! The parents are not allowed to stay in the studio and now when I leave she just smiles and waves . She is quite the little dancer. She like to "shake, shake" and her favorite is the "choo choo". We are preparing for the Christmas recital, hopefully she will go on stage without me this time!

So I am 28 now. Not really much more to say about that. We celebrated with an evening at On the Border followed by cake. I got some scapbooking materials and am finally putting about 2 years worth of pictures together. I am having a lot of fun and accomplished 2 scrapbooks and one photo album thus far. This is one major accomplishment as it was one of my goals this year. I love accomplishing things it is such a great weight lifted off of shoulders! Even better is the lifelong memories I am creating (assuming Payton does not tear them apart)!
